Desirée Wijgman Dutch, b. 1964
“Those who observe carefully never see the same thing.”
Desirée Wijgman was born in Amsterdam in 1964. She completed her studies in Teacher Training and Textiles at the Mode Academie in Amsterdam. She has been working as an independent artist since.
Wijgman doesn’t commit herself to a certain direction, she works with various types of stones and metals, such as marble, granite, sodalite, alabaster, aluminium and bronze. Her forms also vary. The abstract sculptures, mostly consisting of organic forms, are often a combination of materials differing in smoother and rougher surfaces. Her figurative work is sensitive in nature, yet often completed with a touch of humour.
Characteristic of Desirée is her great involvement in her sculptures. This means that she carries out the entire process from start to finish herself. From making a first design in wax or clay, to casting and finishing the presentation on the pedestal. Her work has found a place in companies, government agencies and private collections.
